Thalapothichil is a traditional Ayurvedic head therapy in which the scalp and hair are covered with herbal pastes tailored to individual conditions. The treatment begins with the application of medicated oil to the scalp and hair, followed by a herbal paste—commonly made from dried gooseberry pulp mixed with medicated buttermilk—sometimes enhanced with other herbs. A tender banana leaf is then placed over the paste to cool the head and prevent drying. While the paste remains on the scalp for about 45 minutes, medicated oil may also be applied to the body.
The mild heat generated promotes sweating, improves blood circulation, and allows the active ingredients to be absorbed through the scalp and hair follicles, stimulating peripheral nerve endings.
This therapy is highly beneficial in relieving stress, anxiety, and sleep disorders, while also addressing dandruff, hair loss, chronic headaches, sinusitis, and degenerative conditions of the cranial nerves.
